History

SMART Management, Inc. is a fifteen-year-old company that exemplifies entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to performance excellence in the highly charged substance abuse management arena. Based in Providence, Rhode Island’s capital city, SMART has helped economic development in an area that had become a blighted eyesore by purchasing a rundown factory building and creating an upscale corporate office and high-paying technical and administrative positions.

As the management company for out-patient substance abuse treatment and mental health clinics located in six states, President David L. Piccoli, II, set out to ensure that the clinics managed by SMART would be the most effective and efficient in the industry. When it became apparent that there was a void in the marketplace for a software program that could meet SMART’s high standards, the firm created SMART Classic. With great foresight, he recognized that the best way to achieve his objectives was to create a “paperless” clinic to cut down on administrative time and increase patient treatment time.

The SMART package is the only clinic management software that manages the day-to-day operations of a network of programs, including fingerprint ID scanner, signature pad and digital patient imaging for easy, reliable identification. Counselors digitally sign treatment plans into their patient’s electronic chart, and drug screen test data is downloaded directly into the SMART database.

The innovative SMART software package performed so well that SMART made a decision to offer it to other clinics. It has proven so successful that SMART's electronic medical record software is now used by clinics throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as several installations in Europe and the Caribbean.

Continuous updates were created to improve efficiency and to address changing practices and regulations. The most recent version of SMART offers electronic signatures and programming to make compliance with the new HIPAA regulations automatic with every transaction.
